Gardening Club

We started this new lunchtime club after half term, at the end of February.  Twelve Year 6 pupils enthusiastically signed up straight away and three more have joined since.

Our first challenge was to construct the flat-pack potato barrel, which was one of the rewards we earned by collecting Morrisons Let’s Grow vouchers. This was successfully and speedily managed and then we planted 5 seed potatoes, which came with the barrel.  The seed potatoes had already started to sprout so we could get them off to a good start.  The aim is to get all our crops ready before the summer holidays, so that we don’t miss them!

We then used a handy wooden gadget called a paper potter to make tiny pots out of newspaper.  These were perfect for planting some tiny strawberry seeds. Over the next 4 weeks we planted pots of chillies, nasturtiums, carrots, tomatoes and basil.

The lovely spring sunshine meant that at this week’s session we found that our potatoes and carrots outside have sprouted. This was very exciting, as well as most of our indoor seeds growing well.

After the Easter holidays we will be taking over a raised bed and planting more outside.
